About PeerQube
PeerQube is a not-for-profit peer tutoring service for York University students. Students who have already done well in a course can tutor students who are currently taking it, arranging and paying for sessions through the site. There is no cost to join and nothing added to what a student pays their tutor. It is built and run independently and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by York University.
Why it exists
PeerQube was made with two things in mind. The first is to give York students a real source of income by tutoring their peers: work that pays properly, that fits around a course load, and that uses something they already have.
The second is to connect the community together. Almost everyone is strong in some courses and struggling in others, and which is which changes from term to term. A student being tutored in one course is often the right person to tutor another, and over time that goes in both directions. That exchange is the point of the site, not a side effect of it.
What the 3% fee is for
PeerQube takes a 3% fee to cover hosting and payment-processing costs. It is deducted from the tutor's earnings, not added to what a student pays: a student is charged the tutor's listed hourly rate for the length of the session and nothing else. A tutor receives that amount less the 3% and less the processing fee Stripe itself charges to handle the payment. There is no commission beyond it, no subscription, and no listing fee. PeerQube is not operated for profit — the fee is there to keep the site running, not to make money from it, and a tutor still sets their own rate and keeps the large majority of it. The full arrangement, including when payouts are released, is set out in our Terms and Conditions.
How tutors are verified
Tutors apply to tutor specific courses and state the grade they earned in each. That grade isn't taken on trust: it's confirmed during a live video interview with a PeerQube admin, in which the applicant shares their screen showing their official York Degree Progress Report so the admin can see the recorded grade themselves. An admin may correct a grade on the application based on what they see before approving it. PeerQube receives no transcript or grade data from York University, and keeps neither a copy of the Degree Progress Report nor a recording of the interview. What we retain is the confirmed grade on the tutor's profile. Our Privacy Policy describes what is collected and kept in full.
