Privacy Policy

PeerQube ("PeerQube", "we", "us") operates a peer tutoring marketplace for York University students. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. PeerQube is an independent service and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by York University.
Information we collect
We collect information you provide directly, and information generated by using the Service:
- Account information: your name and York University email address, used to verify you're a York student.
- Tutor application information: the courses you're applying to tutor, the grade you state for each, and a short teaching bio. Grades are entered by the applicant and then confirmed during a live video interview with a PeerQube admin, in which the applicant shares their screen showing their official York Degree Progress Report so the admin can see the recorded grade themselves. An admin may correct a grade on the application based on what they see before approving it. PeerQube does not receive any transcript or grade data from York University, and does not retain a copy of the Degree Progress Report or a recording of the interview. What we keep is the confirmed grade on the tutor's profile.
- Booking information: which sessions you book or teach, scheduling details, and the course involved.
- Ratings and reviews: if you rate a session you booked, we collect the score you give and any written comment you add. A review is shown on that tutor's profile to other signed-in users, along with your first name and the initial of your last name.
- Messages you send through the Service to a student or tutor, whether or not you have a booking with them — a student can message any approved tutor before booking anything. Messages are readable by PeerQube admins for safety, moderation, and dispute-review purposes.
- Reports, and any evidence submitted in connection with a report (for example, a recording of a session), when you file or are named in a report.
- Payment information processed on our behalf by Stripe, our payment processor. We do not receive or store your full card number; see "Payment processing" below.
- For tutors, identity-verification information collected directly by Stripe as part of enabling payouts to your bank account. We store a reference to your Stripe account, not the underlying identity documents themselves.
- Bug reports: if you use the "Report a bug" form, we collect your description of the problem and the address of the page you were on. If you're signed in we record which account filed it; if you're not, the form is anonymous unless you choose to add an email address so we can follow up. That field is optional and the report works without it. Bug reports are used to fix the Service, and nothing else.
- Basic technical information (such as browser type and IP address) generated automatically by using a website, and authentication cookies described in our Cookie Policy.
How we use this information
We use your information to operate the Service: to verify eligibility, create and manage bookings, process payments and payouts, send you emails about your account and bookings (such as a booking confirmation or a refund notice), review and resolve reports, maintain the safety of the platform, and fix bugs and improve how the Service works. We do not sell your personal information.
Payment processing
Payments are handled by Stripe. When you pay for a session, your payment details are sent directly to Stripe and are subject to Stripe's own privacy policy; PeerQube never receives or stores your full card number. Tutors are paid out through Stripe Connect, which requires Stripe to independently verify a tutor's identity before enabling payouts; that verification is conducted and retained by Stripe, not PeerQube.
Who we share information with
We share information with the service providers that operate PeerQube on our behalf, each acting under their own privacy and security obligations:
- Supabase, for account authentication and database hosting.
- Stripe, for payment processing, tutor identity verification, and payouts.
- Resend, for sending transactional emails (such as booking confirmations and report-related notices), and for receiving email sent to our peerqube.com addresses.
- Google, whose Gmail service holds the mailbox that email to our peerqube.com addresses is delivered into — including anything you send us about a report, such as a session recording, and anything you send us about a privacy request.
- Vercel, our hosting provider, to run the website itself.
If you apply to become a tutor, the link we send you to book your verification interview takes you to Calendly, a third-party scheduling service. PeerQube doesn't send Calendly any information about you. You book with them directly, and whatever you enter there is handled under Calendly's own privacy policy.
The other party to a booking (your matched student or tutor) can see the information necessary to complete that booking, such as your name and course. A review you write about a tutor is visible to other signed-in users, as described above. We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of our users.
Data retention
We retain account and booking information for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward, to meet legal, accounting, and dispute-resolution needs. You can request deletion of your account as described below.
Your rights
PeerQube operates in Ontario, Canada, and handles your personal information under Canada's federal privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information by contacting us at inquiries@peerqube.com. We'll respond within a reasonable time. Deleting your account does not delete records we're required to keep for legal or financial reasons, such as payment records.
If you're not satisfied with how we've handled a privacy request or a complaint, you have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, which oversees compliance with PIPEDA.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
